Simply put, this is a plow-horse made pretty.  Native to the southwest, it is cultivated in heavy, alkaline, salty soils and used for cattle fodder, windbreaks and erosion control.  Dr. Love recognized it's ornamental potential and brought it north to "refine it's appearance". In doing so he found it to be not only winter-hardy, but in this selection, the airy, rose-tinged panicles are held loosely in their vase shape and do not split down the middle, giving the intended impression of a fountain.  The persistant "flower" heads make an endurring arrangement.
